Our Komodo adventure began aboard the Pinta Komodo liveaboard, a truly stunning traditional wooden phinisi. Built in 2021, you can still feel the newness and meticulous craftsmanship. She’s a 30-meter long, 6-meter wide vessel, built from sturdy ironwood and beautiful teak. The GT83 superstructure really gives her an impressive profile. With a top speed of 8-10 knots and a massive 5000-liter water capacity, Pinta Liveaboard is perfectly equipped for extended journeys through the Komodo National Park.
The Pinta accommodates a maximum of 13 adults and 4 children, spread across five selections of luxury rooms. Each room felt like a private oasis, a real treat after a day of exploring. We were there in December, which is actually the rainy season, but don’t let that deter you! This time of year, particularly December and January, offers incredible visibility – often over 30 meters – and is hands down the best time for seeing mantas. We had several unforgettable encounters.
Diving into Komodo’s Wonders
Komodo National Park itself is immense, covering 1,733 km². Designated a protected area in 1980, it’s now a UNESCO Biosphere and World Heritage Site, and you can see why. The sheer biodiversity is astounding. Our itinerary typically involved 3-4 dives a day, with the exception of our arrival and departure days. Pinta offers trips ranging from a quick 3 nights to immersive 2-week expeditions, allowing for deep exploration of the region.
The main dive sites are scattered around Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and Flores islands. Batu Bolong was a particular highlight for me – an absolute jewel with its vibrant coral gardens and an incredible density of fish life. Every dive felt like entering a different world. Remember to budget for the National Park fee, which is 300,000 Rupiah per person for each day you dive within the park on a liveaboard. It’s a small price to pay for such an extraordinary experience.
