Not freely. Komodo National Park is a protected conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and drone use inside it requires permission from the park authority rather than being a default right. What we can state with confidence

• Komodo National Park is a protected conservation area of roughly 1,817 square kilometres, managed by Balai Taman Nasional Komodo, and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.
• Filming and aerial activity inside a national park in Indonesia sits under park-authority permission rather than being unregulated.

• A permission process exists and is used routinely by commercial operators. It takes time, which is why it must be started before you travel.

What we cannot verify, and will not invent

Operator sources report a drone permit fee of around IDR 1,000,000 for Komodo National Park. We have not been able to confirm that figure against an official published tariff, in the same way that certain other widely circulated numbers — the IDR 600,000 and IDR 900,000 “entrance fees” — turn out to be bundled operator charges rather than the government rate. Treat the IDR 1,000,000 figure as an operator-reported amount to budget for, and confirm the current requirement and cost directly with Balai Taman Nasional Komodo or through your operator before you travel.

We are being explicit about that uncertainty because the alternative is what most travel pages do: quote a number confidently, get it wrong, and leave a traveller arguing with a ranger. The verified number on this trip is the park entry ticket. The government tariff set by Peraturan Pemerintah No. 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, flat, with trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling included. Indonesian nationals pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends and public holidays.

The process to follow

Where not to fly, permission or not

• Over or near Komodo dragons and other wildlife. Disturbance of protected fauna is the point of the restriction, not a technicality.
• Over the ranger stations and trekking groups on Komodo and Rinca.
• Around Kalong at dusk, when the flying-fox colony leaves the mangroves — a drone in that airspace is both a disturbance and a collision risk.
• Over other boats and their guests. A crowded anchorage at Padar at sunrise is not the place.
• Anywhere near Komodo Airport approach paths.

What you can shoot instead, without a permit

The Padar ridgeline at sunrise, the pink sand at Pink Beach and the phinisi under sail are all shot beautifully from the deck, the tender or the trail. A 30-metre by 6-metre ironwood and teak phinisi with her sails set is a better subject from a low tender angle than from 80 metres up, and the sunrise hike on Padar gives you the elevation a drone would have provided. On the water, the glass-bottom tender gives an angle on shallow reef that no drone reaches.

What happens if you fly without permission

Rangers patrol the main landing points on Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and a drone in the air above a trekking group is not subtle. The realistic outcomes are confiscation of the aircraft, a formal report, and the boat you are travelling on carrying the consequence with you — because operators are known by name to the park authority and a repeat incident affects their standing, not just yours.

There is also a quieter cost. An operator who lets guests fly without permission is telling you what its attitude to the rest of the rulebook looks like, including the parts that matter underwater: guide ratios, certification checks and the decision to call off a dive. Ask how they handle drone permissions and you learn something about how they handle everything else.

Why the park bothers

Komodo’s protection is the reason it still holds what it holds — more than 1,000 reef fish species, over 250 corals, and the dragons themselves. Rules that feel inconvenient to a visitor with a drone are the same category of rule that keeps grey reef sharks routine on the pinnacles when they have thinned elsewhere in Indonesia. Ask for permission, budget the time, and if it does not come through, leave the drone in the cabin.
