How to read that table
Three patterns matter more than the individual rows.
The calm window is longer than people think
April to June and September to November are eight months of genuinely good conditions, and the September-to-November stretch in particular is the one experienced divers quietly book: flat water, visibility toward the top of the 15-to-30-metre northern range, full access to the exposed pinnacles, and shoulder pricing rather than the July-August premium.
Peak season is about crowds, not conditions
July and August are peak because of northern-hemisphere holidays, not because the diving is better than May or October. Visibility is good, but the open straits and the water around Padar are windier, and the sites are busiest. If your dates are flexible, moving a July trip to September buys you calmer water at a lower price.
The manta trade-off is the real decision
December to March gives peak manta density because plankton-rich monsoon water fills the channels. It also gives the roughest seas of the year, sends some boats to maintenance, and frequently closes the southern crossing. Manta Alley’s highest densities and the months you are least likely to reach it are the same months. Karang Makassar in the north-central park works year-round, which is the compromise most divers take.
Booking lead times for 2027
- July and August: four to six months ahead. These dates go first.
- December to March manta window: four to six months ahead, and be honest with yourself about sea state.
- April to June and September to November: more availability, but the best dates still move early. Three to four months is comfortable.
- Southern charters of six days or more: book with weather flexibility written into the plan, because the crossing is a judgement call made on the day.

What the monsoon months actually feel like
It is worth describing rather than labelling. December to March is not continuous storm; it is a pattern of squalls, longer swell in the open straits and crossings that get postponed by half a day. Northern and central sites remain diveable on most days, and Karang Makassar — a channel at 8 to 18 metres with a gentle drift — is comparatively sheltered, which is why it carries the manta season.
What changes is certainty. A December itinerary is a plan with alternatives attached, and a crew that reroutes twice in a week is doing its job rather than failing it. Divers who book those months and expect a fixed schedule have a difficult trip; divers who book them for the mantas and accept the rerouting usually come back.
The thing seasons do not decide
Season sets conditions; charter length sets how much of the park you actually dive. A four-day charter returns nine to eleven dives in the north and central park in any good month. An eight-day charter returns twenty-two to twenty-six and reaches the south. Divers agonising over May versus October and then booking three nights have optimised the wrong variable.
