Komodo is cheaper, easier to reach and stronger on sharks, dramatic topography and manta feeding aggregations. Raja Ampat has higher reef-fish and coral diversity, warmer water and calmer cleaning-station encounters, but costs more and takes a full extra travel day each way. Divers with one week and a normal budget should choose Komodo; divers chasing biodiversity and willing to spend more should choose Raja Ampat.
The comparison table
| Factor | Komodo National Park | Raja Ampat |
|---|---|---|
| Marine biodiversity | More than 1,000 reef-fish species and more than 250 coral species, inside the Coral Triangle | The highest recorded reef-fish and coral diversity on earth — the centre of the Coral Triangle |
| Signature encounter | Grey reef sharks on the northern pinnacles, manta feeding aggregations, dragons on land | Manta cleaning stations, wobbegong and walking sharks, pygmy seahorses, soft-coral walls |
| Current | Very strong on the northern pinnacles and channels; a current destination by nature | Strong in the Dampier Strait, gentler elsewhere — more choice of easy sites |
| Visibility | 15–30 m north and centre; 10–20 m in the south | Typically 15–30 m, dropping in plankton blooms |
| Water temperature | 26–29 °C north and centre; 21–25 °C south in the Jun–Sep upwelling | Consistently warm, generally 28–30 °C |
| Best season | Apr–Jun and Sep–Nov for conditions; Dec–Mar for mantas | Oct–Apr is the main season; Jun–Sep is windier in the south |
| Access | Fly to Labuan Bajo — about 1 to 1.5 hours from Bali, 2 to 2.5 hours from Jakarta, then board the same day | Fly to Sorong, usually via Jakarta or Makassar, often overnight, then a ferry or transfer to Waisai |
| Travel days lost | Effectively none — boarding is the day you land | Typically a full day each way, plus overnight flights |
| Minimum realistic trip | 3 days / 2 nights, and it still works | Most liveaboards run 7 nights or longer |
| Cost level | Lower — whole-boat dive charter on Pinta from USD 11,250 for 4 days / 3 nights | Higher — longer minimum trips and higher flight costs |
| Non-diver appeal | Very high — Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo dragons, snorkelling for all levels | High but more marine-focused; less to do out of the water |
| Topside highlight | Padar Island sunrise ridge and Komodo dragons in the wild | Karst island seascapes and Piaynemo viewpoint |
Where Komodo genuinely wins
Access. This is the underrated factor. Labuan Bajo is 1 to 1.5 hours from Denpasar and 2 to 2.5 hours from Jakarta, served by Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and the Lion Air group, and you board the boat the same afternoon you land. Getting to Raja Ampat is a genuine expedition by comparison, and on a ten-day holiday that difference is worth two extra diving days.
Cost. A whole-boat Pinta dive charter is USD 11,250 for four days and three nights, which is roughly USD 1,406 per person across eight divers. Raja Ampat liveaboards rarely sell trips shorter than seven nights, so the entry ticket to the destination is structurally higher before you have compared a single nightly rate.
Drama. Komodo topography is more theatrical: pinnacles rising out of deep water, channel dives where the tide flushes you through a gap, shark packs holding station in blue water. It is the better destination for divers who want their pulse to move.
The land component. Komodo dragons, the Padar sunrise ridge and Pink Beach mean a non-diving partner has a real holiday rather than a wait. Very few dive destinations can say that.
Where Raja Ampat genuinely wins
Sheer diversity. Raja Ampat sits at the exact centre of the Coral Triangle and holds the highest recorded reef-fish and coral diversity anywhere. Komodo is superb; Raja Ampat is the global maximum, and an experienced diver notices it within two dives.
Warm water and easier profiles. Consistently 28–30 °C against Komodo’s 21–25 °C in the southern upwelling. Long dives are simply more comfortable, and a 3 mm suit is always enough.
Calm manta encounters. Manta Sandy in the Dampier Strait is a cleaning station where divers settle behind a marker and watch animals queue — a completely different experience from a feeding drift at Karang Makassar. Photographers usually prefer it.
Macro. Pygmy seahorses, wobbegongs and walking sharks give Raja Ampat a critter list Komodo cannot match.
Best for — the decision in one block
- Best for a first Indonesian liveaboard: Komodo. Shorter trips, easier flights, lower commitment.
- Best for sharks and adrenaline: Komodo — Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, The Cauldron.
- Best for underwater photographers: Raja Ampat for macro and cleaning-station behaviour; Komodo for wide-angle drama and shark action.
- Best for mixed dive and non-dive groups: Komodo, decisively.
- Best for divers who have already done Komodo twice: Raja Ampat.
- Best for a tight budget: Komodo, and the shorter charter lengths make it possible at all.
- Best for a once-in-a-lifetime trip with time and budget: Raja Ampat, ten days minimum, October to April.
Plenty of divers do both, in that order — Komodo first because it is the easier entry, Raja Ampat second because by then you know whether you want the world’s densest reef enough to spend two days travelling to it. Komodo charters run from this boat; the Raja Ampat side of the same programme is set out at luxuryrajaampat.com.
Frequently asked questions
Is Raja Ampat better than Komodo for diving?
Raja Ampat has higher biodiversity and warmer water; Komodo has stronger topography, more shark action, easier access and lower cost. For a first Indonesian liveaboard Komodo is usually the better choice; for a diver chasing maximum biodiversity Raja Ampat is.
Which is cheaper, Komodo or Raja Ampat?
Komodo, on both counts. Flights are shorter and cheaper, and Komodo charters run from three days whereas most Raja Ampat liveaboards start at seven nights. A whole-boat Pinta dive charter is USD 11,250 for 4 days / 3 nights.
How do I get to Komodo compared with Raja Ampat?
Komodo: fly to Labuan Bajo, about 1 to 1.5 hours from Bali or 2 to 2.5 hours from Jakarta, and board the same day. Raja Ampat: fly to Sorong, usually via Jakarta or Makassar and often overnight, then transfer onward, costing roughly a day each way.
Which has better visibility, Komodo or Raja Ampat?
They are comparable at 15 to 30 metres in good conditions. Komodo’s southern sites are the weak point at 10 to 20 metres because of Indian Ocean upwelling.
Is the water colder in Komodo?
In the south, yes — 21 to 25 degrees Celsius during the June-to-September upwelling, against 28 to 30 degrees year-round in Raja Ampat. Komodo’s north and centre run 26 to 29 degrees.
Where are the manta encounters better?
It depends what you want. Komodo’s Manta Alley has higher density in the December-to-March plankton season. Raja Ampat’s Manta Sandy offers calmer, closer cleaning-station behaviour, which most photographers prefer.
Can non-divers enjoy both destinations?
Komodo is clearly better for non-divers, with Komodo dragons, the Padar sunrise ridge, Pink Beach and all-level snorkelling. Raja Ampat is more purely marine-focused.
When should I go to each?
Komodo: April to June and September to November for conditions, December to March for mantas. Raja Ampat: October to April is the main season, with June to September windier in the south.
