How Many Dives a Day Do You Actually Get on a Komodo Liveaboard?

Three dives a day is the honest average on a Komodo liveaboard, with a fourth night dive on some evenings at sheltered sites. Over a 4-day / 3-night charter that adds up to roughly nine to eleven dives; an 8-day trip returns roughly twenty-two to twenty-six. Tides, not ambition, set the ceiling.

Why three, and not four or five?

Komodo is a tidal park. Water moves between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean through a set of narrow channels, and the good sites only fish well in a particular phase of that movement. Batu Bolong is a wall of biomass at slack-to-building current and a washing machine two hours later. Castle Rock rewards a negative entry timed to the minute. A dive team that runs five dives a day in Komodo is, in practice, running two great dives and three mediocre ones.

So the day is built around tide tables rather than around a fixed timetable. A typical schedule looks like this, and it shifts by up to two hours from day to day.

How many dives per trip length?

The dive count follows the trip length, but not linearly — longer trips reach further south, and southern legs burn hours in transit. These are the working numbers used when the dive team plans a Pinta charter.

Two details behind those numbers. First, the last day is not a write-off: check-out is at 5 p.m., which buys two to three extra dives on the morning most boats spend motoring back to harbour. Second, the count assumes a group with compatible certification. Mixed groups lose dives, which is the next section.

What steals dives from your schedule?

• A mixed certification group. If half the boat cannot dive Castle Rock, the dive team either splits the group across two tender runs or picks an easier site. Both cost time. Pinta’s working minimum is Open Water or Advanced with around 30 logged dives; full site access realistically wants Advanced plus 50.
• Weather in the south. December to March the southern crossing is often called off, and with it the Manta Alley and Cannibal Rock days.
• Air consumption. A diver burning a 12-litre cylinder in 28 minutes at Batu Bolong ends the dive for their buddy pair, not for the boat — but three such divers reshape the day.
• Check dives. Most charters start with a shallow, sheltered check dive at Siaba Besar or Sebayur. It counts, but it is not a highlight.
• Flying out. The last dive has to sit at least 18 hours before a flight if you have been doing repetitive multi-day diving.

Does more dives per day mean a better trip?

Not in Komodo. The park’s reputation rests on a handful of high-energy sites that are only worth diving in a narrow window. A trip that lands eleven dives, of which eight were timed correctly, beats a trip that lands sixteen dives of which four were. When you compare operators, ask a sharper question than “how many dives”: ask how the daily plan is built, and whether the guide will move the schedule when the tide moves.

The other lever that genuinely changes what you see is trip length, because it changes geography. Manta Alley in the far south and the cold-water macro of Cannibal Rock are simply not reachable on a short charter, whatever the daily dive count.
