Komodo is not dangerous for beginners — certain Komodo sites are. Siaba Besar, Pink Beach, Sebayur, Tatawa Besar and Karang Makassar are all comfortable for a new diver. Castle Rock, Shotgun and Batu Bolong are advanced sites where a new diver is genuinely out of their depth, and a good operator splits the group rather than the difference.
Two Komodos
The reputation problem with Komodo is that the sites that made it famous are the ones a beginner should not dive, and the sites a beginner should dive rarely get written about. The result is a destination that reads as intimidating and dives as approachable, provided the operator is honest about which is which.

What actually makes Komodo demanding
Not depth. Not cold, in the north. Not visibility, which runs 15 to 30 metres in the northern and central park. It is current, and specifically three behaviours of current that a diver who learned in calm water has never met.
- Down-currents. Water forced down a wall or off a pinnacle tip, taking a diver with it. The response — get onto the reef, deflate, stabilise, do not fin up — is counter-intuitive and needs to be briefed before it happens.
- Negative entries. Rolling in with an empty BCD and descending immediately, because floating on the surface means missing the site entirely. Simple, but disorienting the first time.
- Drift and pick-up. The boat comes to you. Surfacing away from the tender with an SMB up is normal here and alarming if nobody told you.
The certification bar, and why operators hold it
Pinta’s working minimum for fun diving is Open Water or Advanced with around 30 logged dives, and full access to the current-heavy sites realistically wants Advanced plus about 50 dives. Guide ratios follow the PADI standard of four divers per guide, which on a site like Batu Bolong is the difference between a problem noticed immediately and a problem reconstructed afterwards.
That bar exists because Komodo is remote. Definitive hyperbaric treatment is not in the park, and evacuation from Labuan Bajo is by air. An operator who waves a nervous diver onto Castle Rock because the group booked it is gambling with a consequence they cannot manage locally. The right answer — and the one you should look for when choosing a boat — is a dive team that splits the group and runs the beginner on Siaba while the advanced divers hook in at the pinnacle.
A sensible first Komodo week
The progression a well-run charter uses with a mixed group builds capability across the trip rather than testing it on day one.
- Dive 1: Siaba Besar check dive. Weighting, buoyancy, gear check, turtles as a bonus.
- Dive 2–3: Pink Beach or Sebayur. Shallow coral, light current, the first real dives.
- Day 2: Tatawa Besar. First proper drift, moderate, forgiving.
- Day 2–3: Karang Makassar. Gentle drift, mantas, all levels. This is usually the dive people remember.
- Day 3–4: Batu Bolong lee, only if the guide has seen you hold position in current.
- Pinnacles: Crystal Rock, then Castle Rock, only with Advanced and the logged dives to back it.
If you are not certified at all
Open Water runs over three days on board and certifies you to 18 metres. It is a genuine option, and the whole-boat course charter rates start at IDR 140,000,000 for 4 days / 3 nights. Be clear-eyed about what it buys: a certification and access to the sheltered sites, not access to the pinnacles. The government tariff set by Peraturan Pemerintah No. 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, flat, with trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling included. Indonesian nationals pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends and public holidays.

Is Komodo too advanced for a beginner diver?
No, but several of its famous sites are. Siaba Besar, Pink Beach, Sebayur, Tatawa Besar and Karang Makassar are all suitable for new divers, while Castle Rock, Shotgun, Crystal Rock and Batu Bolong need Advanced certification and experience.
How many logged dives do I need for Komodo?
Around 30 as a working minimum with Open Water or Advanced certification, and roughly 50 with Advanced if you want full access to the current-heavy pinnacles. Below that, the sheltered sites are still excellent.
What makes Komodo diving difficult?
Current, in three specific forms: down-currents off walls and pinnacle tips, negative entries, and drift dives that end with a boat pick-up away from where you started. Depth, cold and visibility are not the limiting factors in the northern park.
Can a beginner dive Manta Point in Komodo?
Yes. Karang Makassar runs 8 to 18 metres with a gentle to moderate drift rated 2 to 3 out of 5, and is suitable for all levels from around ten logged dives.
Will an operator refuse to take me to a site?
A good one will. If a dive team splits the group so that less experienced divers go to Siaba while the advanced divers hook in at a pinnacle, that is the behaviour you want to see rather than a warning sign.
