Why Komodo

Current, Coral and Big Animals

Komodo sits where the Flores Sea meets the Indian Ocean. The water that moves between them is why the reefs are this healthy and the fish this large.

It also means timing matters. Every dive here is planned around the tide, not the clock.

The Sites

Depth, current and the level we ask for at each one.

Castle Rock

A seamount where the current splits. Hold on and watch reef sharks, giant trevally and fusiliers stack up in the blue.

Depth: 18–30 m

Crystal Rock

A pinnacle that breaks the surface at low tide. Hard coral gardens on top, sharks and schooling jacks on the exposed side.

The Cauldron

The Shotgun — a ten-metre channel that fires you through on a falling tide. Mantas and mobulas hang in the flow before the calm of China Shop.

Golden Passage

A drift between Gili Lawa Darat and Komodo. Reef sharks, eagle rays and bumphead parrotfish, ending in a hard coral garden.

Batu Bolong

The Rock with a Hole. Small on the surface, enormous underneath — a living aquarium of coral, reef fish, sharks and Napoleon wrasse.

Makassar Reef

Three kilometres of rubble and cleaning stations. This is the manta stop — reef mantas, eagle rays and marble rays.

Mawan

Coral reef and sandy slope with anemonefish, octopus and mantis shrimp. Reef mantas call in to be cleaned.

Siaba Besar

Turtle City. Green turtles everywhere, plus cuttlefish, sweetlips and macro life in the sand. Good for any level.

Tatawa Besar

The Big Smile. Table corals, huge sponges and soft coral in every colour, with fusiliers and hawksbill turtles over the slope.

Wainilu

Muck diving near the mangroves. Frogfish, ghost pipefish, nudibranchs, blue-ringed octopus and wonderpus. Bring the macro lens.

Three Sisters

Three pinnacles off south Padar, hard and soft coral throughout. Pygmy seahorses on one side, blacktip sharks on the other.

Pillarsteen

A rocky sloping wall with swim-throughs and soft coral. Macro-heavy, but keep an eye on the blue.

Secret Garden

A relaxed dive over dense soft coral and thriving reef. The calm counterpoint to Cannibal Rock next door.

Manta Alley

South Komodo’s manta hotspot. They school, feed and queue at the cleaning stations. Currents can run hard.

Depth: 15–30 m

Level: Advanced

Cannibal Rock

Corals, overhangs and walls, with strong current pulling big fish in to hunt. One of the busiest sites in the park.

Yellow Wall

Named for the yellow sea cucumbers covering it. Nudibranchs, frogfish and moray eels against a wall of coral.
