My recent Komodo adventure on the Pinta Liveaboard was an absolute dream. Komodo liveaboard trips run year-round, but I opted for a high-season trip between April and December. The water temperatures were a comfortable 26-29°C, and we enjoyed visibility up to 30 meters. While manta rays are present year-round, I hear the rainy season between December and February is fantastic for seeing them, with visibility peaking then at over 30 meters.
Diving Komodo’s Underwater Wonders
A 7-night trip is a popular choice for truly discovering Komodo’s best dive sites, and I can see why. We hit some phenomenal spots. Manta Point lived up to its name, with oceanic mantas gracefully circling cleaning stations. Batu Bolong was a vibrant spectacle, teeming with reef sharks, giant trevally, and impressive Napoleon wrasse. Crystal Rock was another highlight, surrounded by schooling fusiliers and sweetlips. We also visited Manta Alley, a seasonal feeding ground that can host dozens of mantas – an experience I hope to catch next time!
Beyond the Dive Sites: Land Excursions
The Pinta Liveaboard offers more than just incredible diving. Land excursions are a key part of the experience. Trekking to see Komodo dragons on both Komodo and Rinca islands was awe-inspiring, a true bucket-list item. The hike up Padar Island for its iconic panoramic views of the three crescent beaches was unforgettable. And, of course, a visit to Pink Beach, one of only seven in the world, was a unique and beautiful stop. Every day on the Pinta was packed with adventure, both above and below the surface.
