Plan a minimum of 18 hours between your last dive and take-off if you have been doing repetitive dives over several days, which describes every Komodo liveaboard. Twelve hours is the absolute floor after a single no-decompression dive. With Labuan Bajo flights concentrated in the morning, that usually means no diving on the final full day.
Flying-after-diving guidance from the recreational dive training and research community distinguishes between three cases. For a single no-decompression dive, a minimum surface interval of 12 hours is suggested. For repetitive dives or multiple days of diving — which is what a liveaboard is — the suggested minimum is 18 hours. Dives requiring decompression stops warrant substantially longer, and no firm minimum is stated.
These are minimums, not targets. The physiology behind them is a probability curve, not a switch, and altitude exposure in a pressurised cabin still means an ascent to a cabin altitude typically around 2,000 to 2,400 metres. Divers who add margin do not regret it.
| Your diving | Suggested minimum before take-off | What this means on a Komodo trip |
|---|---|---|
| Single no-decompression dive | 12 hours | Rare on a liveaboard; applies mainly to a day-trip add-on |
| Repetitive dives, or diving on multiple days | 18 hours | This is the liveaboard case — plan for it |
| Dives requiring decompression stops | Substantially longer than 18 hours; no firm minimum | Outside standard recreational Komodo profiles |
| Practical planning margin | 24 hours | What experienced divers actually book |
Komodo Airport (LBJ) is served by Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Lion Air Group, with frequencies that move seasonally. The route pattern matters more than the exact timetable: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is roughly one to one and a half hours non-stop, and Jakarta to Labuan Bajo roughly two to two and a half hours. Most departures cluster in the morning and early afternoon.
Work backwards. A 10:00 flight with an 18-hour interval means your last dive surfaces by 16:00 the previous day. That is comfortably achievable, but it does mean the afternoon dive on the final full day is your last, and there is no morning dive on disembarkation day.
Charters are built with the flight home in the plan rather than as an afterthought. Two features of the schedule do the work. The first is the 5 p.m. check-out on the final day, which lets the boat run two or three extra dives on the last morning when guests are flying out the following day rather than the same day. The second is the dive team’s habit of putting the shallowest, gentlest profile last — a sheltered reef at Siaba or Sebayur rather than a deep pinnacle — so the final dive contributes as little residual nitrogen as it usefully can.
If your flight is the same day you disembark, say so at booking. The dive plan will be rebuilt from the back end so your last dive lands the previous afternoon.
The clean solution to the whole problem is a hotel night between disembarkation and the flight. It converts a tight interval into a comfortable one, it removes the risk that a delayed return to harbour becomes a missed flight, and it gives you an evening in town at the end of a week at sea. Divers who build this in almost never regret it; divers who book a same-day flight frequently do.
The alternative — ending the diving a full day early to catch a morning departure — costs you two or three dives, which on a four-day charter returning nine to eleven dives is a quarter of the trip. Told at booking, the reservations desk will structure the itinerary either way. Told on arrival, the options are narrower.
Decompression illness after respecting an 18-hour interval is uncommon but not impossible, and Komodo’s remoteness is the reason to be conservative rather than clever. Evacuation from Labuan Bajo to definitive hyperbaric treatment is a flight, not a drive. That single fact is why the dive team will decline to run an extra dive that squeezes your interval, even when the sea is flat and the request is polite.
Plan 18 hours as the working minimum after a liveaboard, because liveaboard diving is repetitive and spread over multiple days. Twelve hours is the floor after a single no-decompression dive, and 24 hours is the margin most experienced divers actually book.
No. With flights clustered in the morning and early afternoon, a same-day dive cannot leave an 18-hour interval. Tell the operator your flight time at booking and the dive plan will end on the previous afternoon.
Yes. The interval runs from your last dive to your first take-off, so a short hop to Denpasar counts exactly the same as a long-haul departure.
Because definitive hyperbaric treatment is not available on site. Evacuation from Labuan Bajo means a flight, which is why dive teams there apply flying-after-diving guidance conservatively rather than at the minimum.
Yes. There is no restriction on diving after flying, and most Komodo charters start with a shallow check dive at a sheltered site such as Siaba Besar or Sebayur on the first afternoon.
