Why it works here and not everywhere

Most manta sites in Indonesia are cleaning stations at 15 to 25 metres, which is a dive and nothing else. Karang Makassar is different: a long rubble channel where mantas feed and transit in a band that starts within a few metres of the surface. The current is a gentle to moderate drift, rated 2 to 3 out of 5, so the water carries you along the channel at a walking pace. You are not swimming to the animals; the channel brings them past.

Density peaks December to March, when plankton-rich monsoon water fills the channels, and mantas are present year-round. That combination — shallow, drifting, year-round — is why Karang Makassar is the one site where a non-diving partner genuinely gets the headline experience rather than a consolation.

What it actually requires of you

• Comfort in open water with no bottom in sight. The channel is 8 to 18 metres deep and you will be well away from land.
• A drift entry. The tender drops you at the top of the channel and follows.
• Willingness to be collected. You do not swim back. The tender comes to you at the end of the drift; this is normal and it is briefed.
• Basic fitness and a mask that fits. Fins are essential; a snorkel vest is available and using one is not a failure.
• Discipline around the animals. Stay at the surface, do not dive down onto a manta, do not touch, do not chase. Duck-diving on top of an animal is how you empty the channel.

What a snorkel charter costs in 2027

Pinta runs a separate leisure rate card for charters built around snorkelling, island stops and the park’s above-water sights rather than around dive operations. It is priced by the whole boat, in three group bands.

Park tickets sit outside these rates. The government tariff set by Peraturan Pemerintah No. 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, flat, with trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling included. Indonesian nationals pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends and public holidays.

Mixing divers and snorkellers on one boat

This is the format that makes or breaks a couple’s trip, and it works on Pinta because of the tender. The glass-bottom speedboat with twin 40 HP Yamahas runs the snorkel group to a shallow site while the divers are dropped at the pinnacle, and both parties are back on board for the same lunch. Karang Makassar is the afternoon where the two groups do the same site at the same time in different ways.

The vessel itself carries the rest of the non-diving day: a jacuzzi, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks, and five en-suite guest cabins for fourteen guests with eight crew. Nobody spends the afternoon waiting on a dive deck for someone else’s dive to end.
