Do You Need Dive Insurance for Komodo, and Where Is the Nearest Chamber?

Treat dive insurance as mandatory for a Komodo liveaboard even where an operator does not formally require it. The park is remote, definitive hyperbaric treatment is not on site, and evacuation is by air. What you need is a policy that covers recreational scuba to your planned depth plus emergency medical evacuation, which most standard travel insurance excludes.

Why this is not a formality in Komodo

Komodo National Park covers roughly 1,817 square kilometres of islands and water, and the dive sites that make it famous sit hours by boat from Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo itself is a regional town connected to Bali by a one to one and a half hour flight. Nothing about that geography is hostile, but it does mean that the chain between an incident and a recompression chamber is measured in hours and involves aircraft. Insurance is what turns that chain from a financial catastrophe into a logistics problem.

What your policy actually has to say

Specialist providers — DAN Asia-Pacific and DiveAssure are the two names you will hear on any Indonesian dive deck — write policies around exactly this list. An annual membership costs less than a single day of a charter. Carry the membership card, and photograph both sides of it before you travel.

Where is the nearest recompression chamber?

Here is the honest answer rather than the reassuring one. We are not able to verify a permanently staffed, publicly confirmed recompression chamber inside Komodo National Park or in Labuan Bajo that you should plan a trip around. The referral pathway divers should assume is evacuation to Bali, where hyperbaric facilities are established, roughly a one to one and a half hour flight from Komodo Airport.

Because chamber availability and staffing in regional Indonesia genuinely changes, do two things before you travel rather than taking any website’s word for it, including this one. Call the emergency hotline printed on your dive insurance card and ask for the current nearest operating chamber to Labuan Bajo. Then ask your operator the same question and see whether the answers match. A dive team that cannot answer that question quickly is telling you something.

What the boat carries, and what it does not

  • Oxygen and first aid on board — the correct first response to suspected decompression illness is surface oxygen, started immediately and continued.
  • Guide ratios kept small, following the PADI standard of four divers per guide, so that a problem is noticed rather than reconstructed afterwards.
  • Briefings built around current, because in Komodo the realistic incident is a separation or a down-current, not an equipment failure.
  • What no boat carries: a chamber. Any operator implying otherwise is worth walking away from.

Does the operator check your insurance?

Policies differ by boat and by charter type. The practical expectation on a Komodo dive charter is that you arrive with certification, a logbook and dive insurance, and that you are prepared to show all three. Pinta’s working minimum is Open Water or Advanced with around 30 logged dives, with Advanced plus 50 dives recommended for full access to the current-heavy sites. Insurance sits alongside those as part of the same conversation: the dive team is deciding whether the group can safely be taken where the group wants to go.

If you are booking a course on board rather than fun dives, ask specifically whether student cover is included in the course fee or whether you need your own. It varies, and it is the sort of detail that surfaces at the worst moment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need dive insurance for a Komodo liveaboard?

Treat it as mandatory. The park is remote, there is no chamber on board, and evacuation from Labuan Bajo is by air. You need cover for recreational scuba to your planned depth plus emergency medical evacuation, which standard travel insurance usually excludes.

Does normal travel insurance cover scuba diving in Komodo?

Frequently not. Many policies cap scuba at 18 metres, exclude it as a hazardous activity, or cap medical evacuation well below the real cost of an air ambulance. Read the depth limit and the evacuation cap before you rely on it.

Where is the nearest hyperbaric chamber to Labuan Bajo?

We cannot verify a permanently staffed chamber in Labuan Bajo itself, so plan around evacuation to Bali, roughly a one to one and a half hour flight away. Confirm the current nearest operating chamber with your dive insurance emergency hotline and your operator before you travel.

Does the boat carry oxygen?

Yes. Emergency oxygen and first aid are carried on board, and surface oxygen is the correct immediate response to suspected decompression illness. No liveaboard carries a recompression chamber.

What certification and experience does Pinta require?

Open Water or Advanced Open Water with around 30 logged dives as the working minimum, and Advanced plus roughly 50 dives recommended if you want access to the current-heavy sites such as Castle Rock and Shotgun.
