Our Komodo liveaboard diving cruise was an unforgettable experience, even during the rainy season. We chose the Pinta Liveaboard, a magnificent 30-meter long by 6-meter wide traditional wooden phinisi, built in 2021. This elegant vessel, constructed from durable ironwood and teak, boasts a GT83 superstructure and can comfortably accommodate up to 13 adults and 4 children across its five luxurious rooms. With a water capacity of 5000 liters and a cruising speed of 8-10 knots, the Pinta provided both comfort and efficiency as we explored the Komodo National Park.
Manta Encounters and Dive Conditions
Many people are hesitant about visiting Komodo during the rainy season, but for manta ray enthusiasts, December and February are actually the best times. Our trip in December delivered on this promise, with incredible manta ray sightings almost daily. The visibility was exceptional, often exceeding 30 meters, particularly in December and January, which made for truly spectacular dives. Komodo National Park itself is a vast protected area, spanning 1,733 km². It was established in 1980 and later recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere and World Heritage Site, its incredible biodiversity.
Exploring Komodo’s Underwater World
We typically enjoyed 3-4 dives per day, a routine followed on most Komodo liveaboard itineraries which can range from 3 nights to two weeks. Our dives took us around the main islands of Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and Flores. One of the absolute highlights was Batu Bolong, a renowned dive site celebrated for its vibrant coral gardens and an abundance of fish life – a true jewel of the park. It’s important to remember that there’s a National Park fee of 300,000 Rupiah per day for each day you dive on a liveaboard in Komodo, an investment well worth it for the privilege of experiencing this pristine underwater world.
